Morocco minaret collapse kills dozens

Dozens of people are now known to have died and many more are feared dead after a four century old Mosque minaret in Morocco collapsed.

The accident happened early in the afternoon local time during Friday prayers at the Bardiyine mosque in Meknes in the centre of the country.

It is feared many victims may still be trapped under the rubble. Scores of worshippers were injured and those that were freed were rushed to hospital by whatever means possible.

It is not infrequent for neglected buildings in the old quarters of Morocco’s cities to collapse but the fall of a minaret is rare.

Many victims were being treated in Meknes’ main hospital and Morocco’s Interior Minister went to visit survivors.

Torrential rains have lashed the region over the past week and there is speculation that may have provoked the tragedy.
