Haiti: Sarkozy holds out hope for the future


French President Nicolas Sarkozy has paid tribute to the courage and tenacity of the people of Haiti during the first ever visit by a French head of state to the former colony.

He was welcomed by Haitian President Rene Preval as a brass band played.

Sarkozy is to tour the earthquake-ravaged country by helicopter and he will also pay a visit a French field hospital.

In his address President Sarkozy called for a silent tribute for the estimated 220,000 people who lost their lives in the catastrophe.

Details of a soon-to-be-released French relief package are understood to include plans for massive infrastructure reconstruction.
