Astronauts open window to the world

Astronauts on board the International Space Station have ventured outside to put the finishing touches to an observation deck giving the occupants a panoramic view of the earth below.

On the last of three scheduled space walks during the 14 day mission, US astronaut Robert Behnken and Brit Nicolas Patrick removed insulation protecting the viewport’s seven windows.

The 20 million euro, Italian-built port gives the station crew a commanding view of earth and approaching cargo vessels.

Major construction of the 73 billion euro orbital outpost is complete and NASA has only four more shuttle missions planned to ferry spare parts and supplies to the station.

After the shuttle missions end, travel to the space station will rely on Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
