Belgian PM flies home after rail crash

News of the crash forced Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme to cut short a visit to Kosovo, where he was starting a tour of the Balkans.

Lending his sympathies to the families affected, Leterme spoke of his shock at finding out about the accident, especially as it happened on a train line he knew well. He said:

“I lived in the area for two years. Very often I took the train at Lot, on the same line from Halle to Brussels. It’s an area where there’s a lot of train traffic, from high-speed links to local connections. We will have to see from the investigation what exactly went wrong.”
