South Africa is marking the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. Now a frail 91-year-old, Mandela was guest of honour in the country’s parliament.
South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma said: “As we celebrate Madiba’s release today, let us recommit ourselves to build in a better future for all the South Africans, black and white. Let us pursue the ideal for which Madiba has fought his entire life”.
The former president is often referred to as Madiba in South Africa.
Celebrations have also taken place at the prison near Cape Town where Mandela, who spent 27 years behind bars, was set free.
Thousands took part in a march, waving the flag of Mandela’s African National Congress.
