The result is not official but the exit polls have Viktor Yanukovich as the winner of the run off in the Ukranian President election. The 59-year-old had the poise and confidence of having gained the top job when he spoke to the press and his supporters.
“I want to bring in reforms to overcome our economic crisis we have to construct a strong country and with that success I thank God because we can open a new page in the history of our country,” said the 59-year-old.
If he is confirmed as the new President it will signal a remarkable political comeback for the man whose initial victory in 2004 was chucked out by the supreme court after allegations of vote rigging.
Since then he has held the post of Prime Minister and in this campaign engaged in bitter polemic with the current Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko whom he told Ukranian TV should now prepare to resign.
