Tropical Cyclone Oli hits French Polynesia

Tropical Cyclone Oli has hit French Polynesia killing one person and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of others from the archipelago.

Authorities told residents to stay indoors, as winds of up to 200km an hour threw up waves of up to seven metres.

On Tahiti, the main island in the vast and widely spread South Pacific ocean territory, several hundred people were forced to abandon houses near the shore overnight.

A red alert has now been called off but schools, roads, airports and harbours remain closed while travel is banned on several islands – except emergency services

The cyclone is now expected to move in a southeastern direction towards the islands of Tubai and Mataura.
