Oscar Nominations Announced


Avatar has been nominated for nine Oscars including Best Film and Best Director. The Hurt Locker is neck and neck however, also with nine nominations including Best Film and Best Director.

With it’s 500 million dollar budget and box office receipts of 1.8 billion, Avatar is a heavyweight player in the Oscar scramble but insider’s are increasingly betting on The Hurt Locker. Inglourious Basterds has eight nominations however and there is hot competition from the other Best Film contenders – The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up In The Air.

Best actress nominations have gone to Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side”, Meryl Streep for “Julie & Julia”, Helen Mirren for The Last Station, Carey Mulligan for “An Education” and Gabourey Sibide for “Precious”.

Best actor nominations have gone to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, George Clooney for “In the Air”, Morgan Freeman for “Invictus”, Colin Firth for “A Single Man” and Jeremy Renner for “The Hurt Locker”

Two European films have been nominated for Best Foreign Film – Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon won the Palm D’Or at Cannes.

“A Prophet” by Jacques Audiard won the Grand Jury prize at Cannes and is now also up for Best Foreign Film.

The Oscars will be dished out on 7th March.
