Russian GDP slumps in 2009


Russia’s economy suffered its worst contraction in fifteen years in 2009.

New government figures show that gross domestic product declined by 7.9 percent.

There were double digit falls in construction and manufacturing as well as the restaurant and hotel sectors.

But there were signs of recovery in December as demand for oil and other commodities picked up.
