Kidnapped British couple 'desperate'

A British couple kidnapped by Somali pirates three months ago have said they are desperate and in urgent need of help.

A video obtained by a UK news channel revealed that Paul Chandler and his wife Rachel are being held in separate locations.

Rachel Chandler was clearly distressed as she was filmed talking to a doctor who had been given permission by the pirates to examine the two captives.

“If I was with my husband I would feel a lot better,” complained Mrs. Chandler. “It’s because I’m not with my husband that I’m feeling so lonely and desperate… Please, please, help us, please.”

The Chandlers were captured while sailing their yacht near the Seychelles on October 23 last year. The pirates have threatened to kill them if a payment of over four million euros is not made. Britain’s Foreign Office says it does not give into ransom demands.

Somali pirates are currently thought to be holding about 13 ships and their crews. The Chandler case is unusual as the pirates mostly deal with international shipping lines and insurance companies rather than individual families.
