Gandhi’s ashes poured into Indian Ocean

world news

| |

Ashes of Mahatma Gandhi have been poured into the Indian Ocean off the South African coast, 62 years after his death.

Mixed with water, the ashes were poured into the sea in a ritual led by Gandhi’s granddaughter.

After Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, his ashes were distributed among family, friends and followers.

Different ceremonies have been held over the years; in 2008 some of his ashes were sprinkled into the Arabian Sea.

The ceremony comes on January 30, the anniversary of Gandhi’s death.
