Director James Cameron has beaten his own record for the highest grossing film of all time. Avatar, the three dimensional epic saga of ecological conflict on a cosmic scale, has taken 1.32 billion euros worldwide – thus overtaking the 13-year-old record held by his previous film, Titanic.
Avatar still needs another 50 million people through the turnstiles to beat Titanic’s records in terms of the number of viewers, but given that the film has only been out for six weeks, industry experts believe that record is well within its grasp.
Many critics have bemoaned Avatar’s storyline as leaden, but the advanced 3D special effects provided the necessary wow factor and it is reported that all the major Hollywood studios are likely to follow the lead. Warner Brothers notably is preparing to release the next two Harry Potter films in three dimensions.
Fans of Gone with the Wind won’t give a damn, however. When inflation is taken into account, the 1939 civil war epic remains the most successful film of all time.
