French consumers spend big in December


French consumer spending posted its biggest quarterly increase in over a decade, indicating a growth in the fourth quarter.

Car sales were well up as people took advantage of the final month of the government’s 1,000 euro car scrappage scheme, which was reduced to 700 euros in January.

Spending on cars was up 9.1 percent in December after a 4.3 jump in November.
