The leader of Germany’s opposition Left Party is quitting the political arena. Oskar Lafontaine former finance minister is facing a battle with cancer.
The 66-year-old broke the news at a press conference. In his career he had been Chairman of the Social Democratic party and was always considered one of the most popular figures on the German left.
He has faced criticism for living in a manor house. “Politicians of the Left don’t have to be poor,” was his response, “but they have to fight against poverty.”
