Russia has reacted to the planned deployment of American missiles in Poland, saying it is simply a matter between Washington and Warsaw. A battery of Patriot missiles, and 100 US military personnel are due to be operational by June, after a deal was signed late last year. The base near the town of Morag will be just 60 kilometres from the border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov said: “Apparently there are reasons why the missiles will be deployed there. Unfortunately I don’t have all the details, but nevertheless I ask myself why is it necessary to do something that makes it look as though Poland is defending itself against Russia?” The Polish defence minister stressed that the site was chosen simply because of its practicality and not for any military or political reason.
Russia and the US are due to resume official talks on a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty next month.
