JP Morgan Chase has emerged as the sole contender in a bid to buy the commodities trader RBS Sempra, according to sources in the know.

Macquarie and Deutsche Bank were also interested, but are now thought to out of the running.

The Royal Bank of Scotland has been forced by European regulators to sell its 51 per cent stake. Sempra Energy is also ready to sell up as part of the deal, believed to be worth 2.8 billion euros.
