Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson steps up the fight for his political survival today, meeting senior party colleagues over the scandal surrounding his wife.
Fellow politician Iris Robinson obtained 55,000 euros from property developers to help her teenage lover set up a cafe.
Accused of failing to declare the loans, Peter Robinson insists he knew nothing of her financial dealings. He says he will defend his position.
“I do have to deal with these issues I can’t avoid because I believe it is necessary to speak today to the public to let them know that I have done nothing wrong, that everything I have done, I have done in a perfectly proper way,” he said.
With his wife’s political career in tatters, Peter Robinson is under growing pressure. Former First Minister David Trimble has added his voice to calls for the embattled politician to quit.
