Croatia’s Josipovic leads presidential poll

The first exit polls in Croatia’s presidential election suggest Social Democrat Ivo Josipovic is on course for a convincing victory.

Early indicators give him nearly 65 percent of the vote.

Despite some critics accusing him of lacking charisma, the 52 year old law professor and composer was firm favourite heading into the second round ballot against his only rival, maverick mayor of Zargreb, Milan Bandic.

Fighting corruption and joining the European Union have been dominant issues in the hard fought electoral campaign, with both men favouring entry into the 27 member bloc.
