Painter Emerik Bernard may not be especially well-known but the 1937-born artist is considered one of Slovenia’s leading Modernists. For a number of years he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. He has developed a unique and recognisable style. His motifs often feature traces of the real world, mainly the Istrian landscape.

In the exhibition currently showing at the Cankarjev dom Cultural centre in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana you can discover the birth of Modernism in Slovenia with paintings from the period 1976–1980.
