Portugal passes gay marriage law

Portugal has become the latest country to legalise gay marriage.

A law was passed by parliament today on its first reading, however proposals to allow adoption by gay couples were rejected.

It’s a landmark decision for the staunchly Catholic nation, which only two years ago lifted a ban on abortion.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates said this latest measure was part of his effort to modernise Portugal.
