Iran’s foreign minister is in Iraq for a delicate visit during a time of difficult relations between the two countries.
Manouchehr Mottaki was met by his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari. Among the most pressing topics of discussion is the matter of a border dispute over the al-Fakkah oil field. It is officially located just a few hundred metres inside Iraqi territory but last month nearly a dozen Iranian soldiers took control of the main well and put up an Iranian flag.
The brief incursion stirred up Iraqi anger at Iran. Relations have been difficult between the two countries since a war in the 1980s and have sunk further after the al-Fakkah incident.
Many Iraqis are also suspicious of Iranian interference in elections set for March.
