A Slovak police chief is facing the sack after a bungled airport security test resulted in explosives being flown on a passenger flight to Dublin. The bomb parts were hidden in the luggage of an unsuspecting Slovak electrician who lives and works in the Irish capital.
While the Slovaks have described the incident as a “silly mistake”, Irish officials are furious that it took Bratislava three days to own up.
The immigration police chief in charge of the operation has now offered to resign saying,
“my fate lies in the hands of the interior minister”.
Security experts say the incident illustrates the inadequacy of luggage screening – the very thing Slovak authorities had sought to test.
