An Egyptian soldier has been shot dead in clashes with Palestinians at Egypt’s border with Gaza.
Trouble flared at a protest against an anti-smuggling wall Cairo is building along the border.
It is the most serious violence between Egyptian and Hamas forces since construction of the underground steel barrier began a month ago.
Israel and Egypt maintain a blockade of the territory, ruled by Hamas Islamists.
On Egypt’s side of the frontier, officials said the 21-year-old soldier was killed by gunfire from the Palestinian part of the divided town of Rafah.
Several Palestinians were also seriously wounded.
Earlier, Egyptian police clashed with international activists trying to deliver aid into the Gaza Strip.
Hamas spokesman Salah Al-Bardawil said he regretted violence between Egypt and Palestinians:
“Despite a difference in points of view and a difference in translating events, it should never lead to any form of violence, verbal or actual violence. So we regret these events and we hope they never get repeated.”
Protests take many forms. Singer Islam Ayoub has made a music video in which he pleads with Egyptians to “have mercy” on the people of Gaza.
