Airports and hundreds of schools have been forced to close, and in some areas people are being warned against travel that is not essential.
There are similar scenes in countries such as Russia. Snow clearing operations are underway in earnest, including measures to prevent avalanches.
Temperatures have fallen to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in countries such as Germany, with extreme snow fall warnings in parts of France as well.
