Foreigners arrested in Iran protests

Iran has announced several foreigners were arrested during recent clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

Speaking on state television Iran’s Intelligence Minister said some non-Iranians had been detained on December 27 because ‘‘they were leading a psychological war against the system.’‘

Even though the nationality of those arrested was not disclosed some sources suggest the foreigners are journalists and include a Briton.

Eight people died on December 27 during the Shi’ite day of Ashura. The nephew of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi was among the dead in the worst unrest since the aftermath of June’s disputed presidential election.

Despite restrictions on media within Iran, amateur video footage made available by internet shows the scale of the punishment meted out by Iran’s security forces.

The Iranian government has said it will not tolerate further protests.
