At least 19 dead in Brazilian mudslide

At least 19 people are now known to have died in Brazil after a massive slab of hillside, loosened by torrential rain, buried a luxury hotel.

Three other houses were also wiped out by the mountain of mud near to the city of Angra dos Ries, close to Rio. Emergency crews were continuing to scramble through the debris in search of more survivors.

Authorities say more than 50 people have been killed after a spate of slides hit the region. Further heavy rain is predicted.

A popular tourist destination with both Brazilians and foreigners, a number of the victims were also locals.

In addition to the bad weather, rescue efforts to save those trapped have been hampered by the fact that the hillside lodge is only accessible by boat.
