Europe sees in the New Year and decade in style


Partygoers across Europe having been marking the turn of the decade and arrival of 2010. In the Eternal City, Romans did it with a splash when four daredevils dived into the River Tiber on New Year’s morning – a tradition dating back to 1946.

In spite of the high water levels, hundreds of people gathered in Venice’s Piazza San Marco to ring in the New Year, with many stealing a traditional midnight kiss.

In Athens, spectators were treated to a spectacular fireworks display in front of parliament, while in Portugal a beautiful light show lit up the Lisbon sky to get the party atmosphere underway.

The iconic Eiffel Tower was the focal point of celebrations in Paris, with revellers determined to enjoy the merriment.

The chimes of Big Ben rang in the new decade in traditional style in the British capital, with the London Eye creating a beautiful backdrop to say goodbye to 2009.

In Berlin, thousands gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, the scene of the recent 20th anniversary to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
