The failed attempt to down a US airliner on Christmas Day is continuing to haunt the US administration. For the second time in two days President Obama has spoken to Americans. In his latest address – while on holiday – he admitted mistakes had been made.
“There was a mix of human and systemic failures that contributed to this potential catastrophic breach of security. We need to learn from this episode and act quickly to fix the flaws in our system because our security is at stake and lives are at stake,” he confessed.
The suspect Farouk Abdulmutallab had regularly used internet forums to express his views. President Obama has said information was not shared by US government agencies.
The President’s second appearance in front of the cameras in as many days is seen as a political move to admit mistakes quickly and blunt criticism, to show he is in control and to reassure the public.
