Israel is being criticised by the United States after announcing plans to build more Jewish homes on the West Bank. 700 are planned for in areas Israel considers part of Jerusalem.
America has said it’s opposed to the settlement-building, fearing it could undermine peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
However, Israel has rebutted this criticism by highlighting that Jerusalem was excluded from a moratorium on settlement construction – meaning the new buildings are not going back on the agreement to freeze construction work.
A spokesman for the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the Israeli building plans, calling the proposal ‘illegal’.
Israeli Prime Minister, Benyamin Netenyanhu, is due in Cairo on Tuesday. He will meet with Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak to discuss the future of peace talks with the Palestinians.
