New York shivers in pre-Christmas cold snap

The big freeze has bitten the Big Apple with snow up to 20 centimetres deep in New York.

While skis and sledges were to be seen in Central Park, the winter storm that has hit the northeastern United States has caused widespread travel chaos.

But for a group of French tourists in a snow-covered Times Square, it was all rather magical.

“It is crazy, crazy to see such a lot of snow here in New York. It is beautiful,” said Miriam Mahias.

“It is awesome. Just perfect for the first time in New York,” Thomas Guillogin added.

As New York battles to keep on top of Mother Nature, with workers helping clear the streets of snow, the cold snap has brought tragedy to the US, causing a number of deaths.

In Washington, Christmas spending has been hit by what has been dubbed “the shopper stopper storm.”
