Thousands of Iranian opposition supporters have reportedly attended the funeral of top dissident Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri in the holy city of Qom.
The report and pictures on Iranian websites could not be independently verified. Foreign media have been banned from attending the event.
The reformist websites claim that after the funeral hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Qom shouting anti-government slogans. They chanted their support for opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi.
The 87-year old Montazeri’s death on Saturday highlights the rising tensions in the Islamic Republic six months after the disputed presidential election that plunged the country into political chaos.
He was viewed as the spiritual patron of an opposition movement that emerged after the controversial election. Montazeri became a fierce critic of Iran’s current hardline leadership.
