Israel’s security cabinet is meeting again today in a crucial effort to find a solution to the question of a prisoner exchange involving Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. He has been held captive by Hamas for three and a half years.
Noam Shalit, the father of the captured Israeli soldier said all possibilities have been utilised to the fullest during his son’s captivity. He said a decisive moment has been reached in the negotiations.
At their meeting yesterday the seven government ministers involved in the talks failed to agree on the issue of a prisoner swap with the Islamist organization.
Hamas is demanding the release of hundreds of its members detained in Israeli prisons in exchange for the 23-year old Shalit.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has, up till now, opposed the such an exchange on the grounds it could pose a serious security risk.
