All cross-channel Eurostar passenger services have been suspended until tomorrow at the earliest, as freezing weather causes travel chaos across much of northern Europe. Some freight trains are still running, but Eurostar says it will be at least 24 hours before passenger operations can resume. Five trains broke down in the tunnel overnight, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and angry.
Other travellers have been hit: the French port of Calais is shut, with thousands of ferry passengers unable to reach dry land. The knock-on delays mean huge traffic jams approaching ports on both sides of the Channel.
Long delays and cancellations are also reported at airports – Britain’s Gatwick was closed for some hours, while passengers were left waiting at Charles de Gaulle in Paris.
