Copenhagen climate talks make no progress

The chaos outside the conference hall has been matched by confusion inside with the major nations seemingly no closer to finding a common stance to combat climate change.

With all sides seeking assurances over what steps to take, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez questioned some delegates desire to reach an accord.

“In the streets they are saying – if the climate was a bank, you would have already saved it. And I think that’s true,” Chavez said.

When the European Commission President took to the stage he called on the world’s biggest polluters to face up to what he said were their responsibilities.

“While fully respecting their differential responsibilities and capabilities, I’d like to call on our partners, the United States and China to contribute further to a successful outcome to this conference,” said Jose Manuel Barroso.
