What will replace fossil fuels?

Talk Planet

Talk Planet has looked at the effects of climate change, now it is time to talk about possible solutions.

We asked Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council, which form of renewable energy was most likely to take over from fossil fuels.

He said: “We can’t replace fossil fuels in the next couple of years but I think in the long term wind power will be a major part of the transition to low carbon society.

“If you look at the power installations in Europe last year, 40 per cent of them were windpower, in the US as well, more windpower was installed than any other technology.

“It’s becoming the investment of choice, really the power system of choice for a growing number of utilities, not only in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries, but also in the developing world, in China, in India and now in Brasil. So we hope to see that multiply exponentially and we definitely hope that the outcome of the negotiations here in Copenhagen help move us in that direction.”
