Protesters gathered in Madrid to add their voices to those calling for concrete measures to fight climate change. Demonstrators painted their hands green as a symbol of their commitment, and a simulated mountain of plastic bags drew the attention of passers by.
South Africa joined Global Climate Change Action day by holding a mock funeral of Mother Earth. Around eight hundred people took part in the event organised by Earthlife Africa and Climate Justice Now! Event organiser Makoma Lekalakala said: “Rich countries must stop playing with people’s lives. We have lived with them for too long, we have been dying for them. So emissions need to be cut and climate justice is what we demand from them.” The worldwide wave of protest reached Beijing, where Greenpeace China drummed out a message to “wake up the world” to the problems of climate change.
