The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been attacked at a square in Milan.
Several witnesses say a young man launched at the 73 year old, leaving him with blood covering his face from at least one wound near his mouth. Police at first said the premier had been punched, but later said the attacker might have hurled an object at him from close range. Before the attack Berlusconi had been giving a speech at a political rally in the city. A member of his staff said the premier was bundled into a car and driven to hospital for treatment for bruising. A close ally of Berlusconi, Umberto Bossi, who heads the far-right Northern League called the assault “an act of terrorism.” Local news agencies reported that a man had been arrested in connection with the attack.
