Nobel laureates pick up prizes in Stockholm

At a lavish ceremony in Stockholm the 2009 Nobel Prize winners in the categories of Economics, Literature, Chemistry, Physics and Medicine received their accolades from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

A record five women have been honoured this year to bring the number of female laureates to 40.

The literature laureate Herta Muellar who grew up under the Ceausescu regime in Romania and famous for works such as “The Land of Green Plums” was praised by the Nobel committee for her “prose that depicted the landscape of the dispossessed.”
