Albanians rally for EU membership

Albania is stepping up its campaign to join the European Union.

The drive behind the effort was evident at a massive rally in Tirana yesterday.

EU and NATO flags were waved at the event, held on the anniversary of student anti-communist demonstrations in 1990.

Prime Minister Sali Berisha told the crowds: “We have made our Berlin wall fall. Now we are advancing rapidly towards the dream of Albanian integration with Europe.”

Albania officially applied for European Union membership in April, in a process that could be long and involved.

Brussels is still to respond to the application.
