Basescu edges into the lead in presidential poll

Romanian President Traian Basescu is poised to win a presidential run off vote with 50 per cent of ballots cast, against 49 per cent for leftist challenger Mircea Geoana.

The Central Election Bureau said the results accounted for 95 per cent of polling stations. Late on Sunday, most exit polls showed Geoana ahead by a slim margin, but a centre-right party allied to Basescu said an unofficial parallel count by its volunteers showed Basescu would win by a whisker. It had been hoped that this poll would clear the political air in Romania – instead it appears that a new round of political infighting has only just begun.
