Laura Davidescu of euronews has been monitoring the election process… With the exit polls showing no clear winner it seems the electorate is divided between those seeking political and social change.
Basescu has campaigned on an anti-corruption platform while his opponent has focused on bringing prosperity to the people. Political analyst Cristian Pîrvulescu agrees. He said: “Mircea Geoana is more social, Basescu is more political, more institutional. He proposes policy reform, institutional reform, a reformed parliamentary system. So we have two candidates, one is more political and one more socially oriented. Romania is now in an economic crisis and I think Geoana’s social agenda has helped contribute to his good result.
