Lyon switches on its Festival of Light

The central French city of Lyon has opened its annual “Festival of Light”.

Glow sticks were handed out to the thousands of onlookers ensuring everyone had a part to play in the spectacular displays. The celebration dates back to 1852. The event originated from a religious tradition in honour of the Virgin Mary whose image towers over the streets below from the heights of the basilica Fourviere. Every year city landmarks are lit up with spectacular animated light shows designed by some of Europe’s luminary artists. As many as four million visitors are expected during the course of the four day exhibition.More about: , ,
