General Motors has scrapped plans to axe more than five hundred jobs at its Opel car plant at Russelsheim in Germany.

Opel’s acting chief Nick Reilly told thousands of workers that the American group wanted to give staff a future and the carmaker a bigger role within GM. The move is likely to defuse tension between management and workers who had accused General Motors of trying to destroy Opel.
