The British Foreign Office has admitted a yacht with a five-man British crew that was arrested in the Arabian Gulf may have strayed into Iranian waters.

The Volvo 60 yacht was intercepted as she sailed from Bahrain to Dubai six days ago. The crew is now believed to be in Iran. ‘The Kingdom of Bahrain’ was skippered by Olly Smith and crewed by Sam Usher, Luke Porter and Oliver Young. Also on board was David Bloomer, who works as a radio reporter in Bahrain. London has contacted Tehran to clarify the situation. ‘The Kingdom of Bahrain’ was part of a regatta which had left Bahrain for a race through the Gulf towards the Omani capital, Muscat. Two years ago, Iran seized 15 Royal Navy sailors and marines in the Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq. They were accused of straying into Iranian waters, but later freed.
