Ebay Inc and its French unit have been fined 1.7 million euros after it failed to stop sales of Louis Vuitton perfumes on its website in the country.
By permitting the sale of scents, Ebay violated a commercial court order to remove all such products from its site. Its part of a 40-million-euro verdict that Ebay has failed to do enough to stop fake Louis Vuitton products being sold online. The Ebay’s French unit says it is shocked by the decision. The company has put additional checks in place to halt sales, but not enough according to the luxury-goods manufacturer. “There was a ban it has to be enforced,” said a Louis Vuitton adviser. The company asked the court to look again to see if Ebay had complied with the court order. Louis Vuitton complained about 1,300 sales of perfume on the website, claiming that they were covered under the 2008 injunction. Ebay intends to appeal.
