Norway has said freedom of expression in Iran is under ‘great pressure’ as it accused Tehran of confiscating the Nobel Peace Prize of Shirin Ebadi.
The Foreign Ministry in Oslo summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires to protest at the apparent removal of the 2003 winner’s gold medal and diploma. The Nobel committee said the alleged theft is a first. Ebadi has been a long-time thorn in the side of Iran’s elite. Last June she called for Iran’s post-election violence to end and for the EU to impose sanctions to press Tehran to stop its crackdown on the opposition.
