Mediators say progress has been made at the Munich a meeting between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia. As they seek a resolution to the thorny issue of Nagorno-Karabakh.Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan sat down with the threat of war, issued by Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, echoing round the world. Aliyev said if the “decisive” talks fail then his military was prepared to take back the mountain territory by force. A savage conflict broke out in 1988. Backed by Christian Armenia, ethnic Armenians wanted independance from Azerbaijan and were prepared to fight for it. As many as 30,000 people were killed until a fragile peace was negotiated in 1994. One year earlier Turkey closed its border with Armenia in solidarity with the Azeris. However, recent moves by Turkey to establish diplomatic ties and re-open the border with Armenia has angered oil-producing Azerbaijan.
