Iran’s leadership is maintaining a defiant attitude towards the international community after rejecting a nuclear deal from the UN’s atomic watch dog.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are meeting in Brussels today to discuss the standoff. While in South Korea, US President Barack Obama warned Iran of consequences for its failure to respond positively to the IAEA’s proposals. The US leader said: “Our expectation is that, over the next several weeks, we will be developing a package of potential steps that we could take, that will indicate our seriousness to Iran.” Iran has thrown out the idea of sending its enriched uranium abroad for rendering into fuel for medical purposes. World powers hope to delay Iran’s potential ability to make atom bombs. Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
