Massimo D’Alema is a contender for the job of EU Foreign Policy Chief. He is a member of Italy’s main opposition party, the centre-left Democratic Party but he has the backing of the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.
And now that the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has ruled himself out as a candidate for the job, the Socialist and Democratic Group in the European Pariament have thrown their weight behind D’Alema. All may not be plain sailing however because Massimo D’Alema joined the Communist Party in 1968, became a member of the central committee in 1979 and edited Communist newspaper L’Unita during the 1980s – none of which endears him to the leaders of the EU’s ex-Soviet-bloc states. The race is still wide open.
