Thousands pay tribute to suicide goalkeeper

Tens of thousands of fans have gathered in Hanover’s football stadium to pay a final tribute to goalkeeper Robert Enke, whose suicide shocked Germany and the sports world.

Enke stepped in front of a commuter train last week following what his wife Teresa said was a six-year battle with depression. The great and the good of German football, including the entire national team, also came to pay their final respects. For many who took part the reality of the 32 year- old’s death was still difficult to take in. Enke will be later laid to rest in a private ceremony and be buried next to his two-year old daughter who died of a heart infection.
